Leonard B. Fowle Trophy Yacht Club of the Year
This year we are awarding this trophy not to a Yacht Club for outstanding
contributions to sailing, but to a fleet. This year's award goes to
J105 Fleet #2. Fleet #2 encompasses boats from north of Cape Cod to
Maine. The fleet started in 1995 with four boats in Boston and Marblehead
and now has 18 members.
Originally the boats raced one design until they had enough members
to race one design. Ernie Hardy of Cottage Park was one of the early
members and the first fleet captain. Boats from Fleet #2 have participated
in the J105 NA's, Key West, Block Island, Newport and Buzzards Bay
Regattas. This year Fleet #2 reconfigured it's racing schedule and
joined with fleet #23 from Southern Maine for it's fleet championship
which is made up of the Marblehead Nood, The PHRF New Englands, The
Smutty Nose Regatta and several other small regattas. In most of these
regattas they put 16-18 boats on the line. It gives me great pleasure
to award this years Leonard B. Fowle Trophy to J105 Fleet #2.
