BYC Wednesday's Child

In theory, if all boats in a Pursuit Race sailed to their respective ratings, everyone would finish the race at the same time. The theory almost proved true in Boston Yacht Club's Wednesday's Child Benefit Regatta sailed on Labor Day, September 3, 2007. With both a racing and cruising class, the top five finishers in the racing class and the top six finishers in the cruising class finished the six mile race within two minutes of each other. For a busy Labor Day Weekend, the turnout of 28 boats, two of which came from Constitution Yacht Club in Boston Harbor, was most encouraging. The weather complemented the event with SW winds of 8 - 15 knots. The course was a broad/beam reach from the starting line near Marblehead Bell to Newcomb's and a close reach on the return leg. Halfway rock lay directly on the rhumb line and decisions (some right and some regretted) whether to leave it to port or starboard affected the results. Achiever V, Atalanta and Indra were the first place finishers in the racing class. Akeepah, Ten and Starfire took the top three places in the cruising class. Results are posted on the Boston Yacht Club's web site - http://www.bostonyachtclub.net/Racing/WednesdaysChild.htm.

This was the fourth pursuit race in the Mass Bay Pursuit Championship. With the Great Chase Race (Sept. 14) and the Boston Harbor Islands Regatta (Sept. 29), both of which register in excess of 100 boats, yet to be sailed, the outcome is uncertain which boats will finish in the top three. You can register for the Great Chase Race at http://www.hullyc.org/chase.shtml and for the Boston Harbor Islands Regatta at http://www.islandalliance.org/regatta.asp.
