2018 COMPETITOR OF THE YEAR

SPARKLE PONY - FRANCIS SHIMAN HACKET & BILL FINN

The Griffith Trophy is awarded to Mass Bay Sailing's Offshore Competitor of the Year. This trophy was revived by the Corinthian Yacht Club in 2002. Ken Bowden on KNOTLESS won it that year. This trophy is awarded to people who exhibit competitive spirit, perseverance and positive attitude both on and off the water – modesty in winning and graciousness in defeat.

This year's winner is a boat that not only knows how to race but also how to have fun. In a season that runs from late May to mid October, they participated in 8 handicap qualifiers and 4 pursuit qualifiers, finishing 2ndand 1st respectively. They also won their local Wednesday night season with a 1st overall in each series. They race hard, often in distinctive costumes. Watching the ponies on the water, it's clear that they have their maneuvers down pat, but one never gets the sense that they are taking themselves too seriously (or anyone else for that matter). It's with great pleasure that I present the Competitor of the Year award to Sparkle Pony!
